About the project

The project resulted in an exhibition, meal, and walk led by artist Jagdish Patel, bringing together stories from the South Asian diaspora. Through photography and archival material, the project focused on people who settled in Nottingham and used their activism to challenge everyday racism in the city.

Jagdish worked with South Asian elders to gather stories and archival material from the 1950s onwards, and to develop a series of portraits. The participants shared their experiences of music and culture, housing campaigns, interventions in factories and workplaces, legal challenges, and the creation of community spaces. Although many of these small acts went largely unacknowledged at the time, they contributed to the Nottingham we know today.

In 2019 the project resulted in the formation of the South Asian Heritage Nottingham group who continue to work on collecting stories.
