Ray of Light : Photography, Mental Health and COVID 19

Where When ?

This project took place during 2020 during the COVID 19 lockdown period from April to December.

About the project

We received funding from the Art Council Emergency COVID fund to run a series of workshops and support groups for isolated people with wellbeing issues, and make a publication outlining their experiences during 2020.

The food bank Himmah was also involved with the project and helped provide food groceries to anyone who needed support.

We engaged with some of the most vulnerable people in Nottingham through a collaborative art practice model. The funding allowed us to run weekly online classes, and peer support groups. We also held a few communal outings over the summer period adhering to COVID restrictions. The overall aim of the workshops and support group was to enable participants to make visual work about their COVID experiences and support each other through the creative process. Although we aimed to maintain a level of quality through tutored support,

in alignment with the current Arts Council ‘Lets Create’ policy document, the project has been delivered through good practice models of democratic participation, with the artist and participants working together despite the COVID 19 restrictions.

‘If the pandemic has exposed the deprivation, inequalities and personal struggles of people coping with the zero hour, austerity-blighted, financially stretched society, it has also reminded us how simple interventions can make a significant impact’
